First Release RoadMap

Christophe Noel (Spacebel) edited this page Oct 1, 2025 · 2 revisions

This is a high-level roadmap for the delivery of the first version of the GeoZarr specification. It outlines the main stages and priorities, without going into detailed task planning.

After almost two years of reflection and discussion, the motivation is to deliver a first version of the GeoZarr specification. A release will only be achievable within a reasonable timeframe if priority is given to essential topics, and consensus is reached on more sensitive matters.

The following roadmap sets out the intended stages:

1. Draft-01

Objective: Produce a complete and consistent version of the abstract model and its encoding in Zarr as specified by GeoZarr.

Key topics to finalise in particular (some sections are early draft only). :

  • Terminology and the basis of the abstract model (including schema)
  • Affine transformation (GeoTransform, etc.)
  • Overviews (product preview support)
  • Clear encoding of the model in Zarr format
  • (Any other essential subject TBD)

2. Step 2 - Release Candidate

Objective: Conduct a general review of the overall specification and ensure consistency across all elements. OGC conventions must also be applied (syntax for requirements).

3. Step 3 - Release 1.0

Objective: Undergo the official OGC review of the document for approval.

4. Next Steps - Version 1.1 and beyond)

Objective: Extend the specification by addressing more complex topics.
