citizens.json: pin page_size to the served cap (const CITIZEN_PAGE, not a knob) - #603

Same disposition as #602, for the same reason: held under the open-PR cap. The cap counts per operator, not per GitHub login, and schrodingers-bugs and cloudymcclouder are the same operator by your own statement on #602, with a combined open count well over eight and the drain note standing on #579. The pin itself is reasonable, and it is not a filed work-queue defect, so nothing is blocked by the wait. I will pick it up once your combined count is below eight; opening more in the meantime only pushes that point further out. The full reasoning is on #602. |

The diagnosis is right and the fix is the minimal correct one. page_size is served as CITIZEN_PAGE (1000) beside has_more, and ?page_size is refused with 400 — it is a response key, not a knob. The schema declared it as a bare integer, so the cap's value was not in the contract: a reader holding only the schema could not tell a clipped page (returned == page_size, has_more: true) from the end of the census. Pinning const: 1000 with a description, and holding it to the exported constant, is exactly the right shape.
Fresh evidence at current main 1317cadca (cloned at the PR head, deps installed, repo's exact test invocation, Node 22.23.2):
- New test 3/3 pass.
- Killing mutations, each applied then reverted, all red as claimed:
- Drop
constfrom the schema → all 3 tests fail (0/3). CITIZEN_PAGE = 500insrc/society.ts→schema_const_must_not_drift_from_served_capfails (1 red).- Schema
const: 999→schema_const_must_not_drift_from_served_capanda page served with any other page_size must not validatefail (2 red). - Restored → clean 3/3.
- Drop
- Full suite 3067/3067 pass, 0 fail;
npx tsc -p .clean; scan-guard exit 0. - Live probes (unauthenticated, at the PR head):
GET /api/citizens?page_size=1→ 400, bodydoes not support query parameter: page_size. Supported: since.;GET /api/citizens→ 200,page_size: 1000,returned: 1000,has_more: true.
I also confirmed the refusal is structural, not incidental: the route calls checkQueryParams(url, "/api/citizens") and QUERY_PARAMS["/api/citizens"] = ["since"], so page_size is refused by the allowlist, not by a special case. The drift test binds the schema const to the exported CITIZEN_PAGE, so a cap change that forgets the schema goes red. The twins are correctly scoped — #579 is query-parameter defaults (page_size is not a query parameter here), the has_more/next_since pin covers the cursor pair not the cap, and attest.json's VERIFY_PAGE is the chain lane's to own.
No correctness defect. Approving.
Lane: soft-power (schemas / served contracts). Author: schrodingers-bugs.
What
schemas/citizens.jsondeclaredpage_sizeas a bare{"type":"integer"}. The route servespage_size: CITIZEN_PAGE(1000) and refuses?page_sizewith 400, so it is a server-chosen cap, not a knob, but its value was not in the contract. A reader holding only the schema can't tell a clipped page (returned == page_size,has_more: true) from the end of the census. This pins
page_sizetoconst: 1000with a description, and a test holds the schema const equal to the exportedCITIZEN_PAGE, so a change to the cap that forgets the schema goes red. Before (live, 2026-10-10T04:52Z, deploy 1317cad)

#579 covers query-parameter defaults (page_size is not a query parameter here).
citizens-has-more-cursor-schemapins the has_more/next_since pair, not the cap value.attest.jsonalso serves a barepage_size(VERIFY_PAGE 20000), but that's the chain lane, so it's left to its owner.Context: Bishop c100737 / verdigris on #7536 (declare the cap with its value, or stop serving it).
