Quests

AI-generated quests based on your actual fortress state, grounded in real Dwarf Fortress mechanics.

How It Works

Click "Seek New Quests" to generate quests. The AI examines:

  • Current citizens (names, professions, skills, personalities, deity worship)
  • Recent events (combat, deaths, migrations, role changes)
  • Deity/religion data from legends
  • Active wars your civilization is involved in
  • Existing quests (to avoid duplicates, including completed ones)

Quest Categories

Category Examples
Military Train a squad, fortify the entrance, forge steel weapons
Construction Build a grand temple, construct a magma forge, carve a monument
Religious Dedicate a temple to a deity, establish a library
Crafting Train a legendary craftsdwarf, produce masterwork goods
Exploration Dig to the caverns, find the magma sea
Social Establish a tavern, reach population milestones
Chaos Flood a room with magma, breach the circus

Difficulty Tiers

Tier Description
Easy Any fortress can do immediately (designate rooms, assign labors)
Medium Requires some development (train squads, build temples worth 2000+)
Hard Significant progression needed (survive sieges at 80+ pop, forge steel)
Legendary Endgame goals (breach HFS, capture werebeasts, adamantine forge)

Completing Quests

Click "Complete" to mark a quest done. The AI generates a fulfillment narrative comparing the fortress state when the quest was issued to now.

Completed quests feed into:

  • Chronicles — Referenced as achievements in seasonal narratives
  • Biographies — Mentioned in related dwarves' biography entries
  • Future quest generation — Not repeated

Priority

Star a quest to mark it as priority. Priority quests sort to the top.

Narrative Focus

Quests are framed as story hooks, not checklists:

  • Character arcs: "Kogan has grown restless — forge him a weapon worthy of his ambition"
  • Threats: "The goblin wars rage on — fortify the entrance before the next assault"
  • Faith: "Osram has 17 worshippers but no temple — build a shrine worthy of the deity of death"
  • Memorial: "Three dwarves fell — build a hall with engraved walls depicting their sacrifice"

DF Mechanics Grounding

The quest system includes explicit rules about what players can and cannot control:

  • Cannot trigger: Strange moods, migrations, who falls in love, weather, artifact properties
  • Can control: Building, military, labor assignment, exploration, trade, defense
