Add the independent Rust firmware as catalog version 4.0.0, pinned to a retrievable core commit. The virtual device now drives production Rust USB descriptors, CCID framing and applet dispatch through a FIFO adapter, while retaining the historical C backend for older releases.

Admin reports 4.0.0, CTAP GetInfo reports 400, and USB bcdDevice is 0x0400. PIV/OATH application versions remain independent at 6.0.0. The catalog limits 4.0.0 acceptance to CCID, persistent storage and simulated touch; NFC, HID, WebUSB and fault recovery testing are deferred.

The Rust adapter advertises full-speed USB to match its production packet sizes, mirrors the address assignment consumed by Linux vhci_hcd, queues idle interrupt requests, and accepts libccid receive capacities larger than its bounded device reply buffer. The CCID wire regression omits SET_ADDRESS and requests 65554 bytes to reproduce the kernel/libccid behavior. Reconnect waits for asynchronous PC/SC reader removal before recording the new baseline.

Review fixes clear pending packets and interrupt requests on disconnect, gate completions on import, preserve the original interrupt request when a duplicate receives EBUSY, and drain halted OUT payloads without dispatching them. PC/SC query failures now fail the lifecycle rather than masquerading as reader removal. CI uploads Rust build logs, and the wire test kills a process that exceeds its termination timeout.

Validation: 45 compatibility infrastructure tests and the native adapter regression pass, along with the Rust adapter build and CCID wire check. CI builds the pinned Rust core with nightly-2026-09-04 and executes these checks: https://github.com/canokeys/canokey-usbip/actions/runs/37240123594. The dependent 143-check functional suite and full kernel USB/IP acceptance are in canokeys/canokey-manager#1.

Full kernel acceptance passes on the final reviewed pin: https://github.com/canokeys/canokey-manager/actions/runs/37241743301. All ten catalog versions pass; Rust 4.0.0 passes every existing applet lifecycle plus all 144 functional checks.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds firmware 4.0.0 support with a Rust build and USB/IP runtime path. It updates the compatibility catalog and harness, adds USB/IP and CCID checks, and makes restart wait for a configured PC/SC reader to disappear.

Changes

Rust firmware 4.0.0

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register and resolve firmware 4.0.0
compat/config/firmwares.yaml, compat/runner/harness.py, compat/tests/test_catalog.py
Adds firmware 4.0.0 and sets it as latest. The harness resolves catalog IDs to core commits and handles Rust-layout USB identity and crypto submodule paths. Catalog tests include the new release mapping.
Configure and build the Rust firmware
CMakeLists.txt, cmake/RustFirmware.cmake, .github/workflows/compat-tests.yml, README.md
CMake selects the Rust configuration for Rust core trees. The new configuration checks versions and builds the Rust host crate and canokey-usbip. The workflow installs build dependencies, and the README documents build requirements and version information.
Route USB/IP traffic through the Rust adapter
Src/rust_adapter.h, Src/rust_adapter.inc, Src/usbip.c
Adds the adapter interface and USB/IP transfer handling. Rust builds route submissions through the adapter, service device and interrupt work, and report full-speed device information.
Validate Rust USB/IP and PC/SC behavior
compat/runner/harness.py, compat/tests/test_harness.py, tests/rust_adapter.c, tests/rust_ccid.py, .github/workflows/compat-tests.yml, README.md
Adds adapter regression tests and a loopback test for USB/IP enumeration, CCID power-on, and APDU responses. PC/SC query errors are distinguished from no-reader results. The workflow runs the Rust checks, and the README lists tested capabilities and deferred acceptance areas.

Reader removal during restart

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wait for reader removal during restart
compat/runner/control.py, compat/tests/test_control.py
When CANOKEY_PCSC_READER is set, restart waits for that reader to disappear. Tests cover successful removal, timeout, and reader-query failure.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9d94f

The new backend remains loopback-only and adds bounded transfers and connection cleanup. Simulated touch introduces a shared temporary-file control with conditional local interference risk. Firmware authentication, storage consistency and recovery behavior could not be fully verified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Rust simulated touch now writes to the process-global /tmp/canokey-test-up path using truncating fopen without checking ownership, file type or symlink traversal. Unlike the legacy in-memory update, this introduces filesystem-mediated control outside the per-run workspace. A pre-created destination can redirect or block a legitimate touch operation where host protections permit. The adapter also consumes the queued touch before confirming write success; downstream presence enforcement and cleanup remain unverified. This is a conditional local ownership concern, not a verified firmware authentication bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly exposed scope is the local virtual-device process and its selected storage file. Local USB/IP clients can supply setup and endpoint traffic to the new firmware backend. The shared touch destination additionally exposes host filesystem behavior under the device process's existing permissions; broader service, tenant or privilege expansion was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A local actor able to pre-create the shared touch destination may interfere with a later legitimate simulated-touch operation. Truncation follows a permitted symlink destination, while a permitted FIFO destination can block the serialized loop. Cross-user feasibility depends on host filesystem protections; firmware user-presence bypass and elevated-privilege execution were not verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Network requests cross into the Rust firmware through explicit setup, OUT, IN and host-loop calls. Interrupt requests retain their sequence identity; duplicate outstanding requests receive EBUSY. The transport boundary is inspectable, but the pinned core's applet authorization, storage enforcement and touch consumption were unavailable.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Interrupt completion is gated by host readiness, which unlink revokes. Disconnect resets attachment and clears staged replies and stored interrupt requests, containing adapter-level cross-client carryover. Regression source checks duplicate identity, halted OUT delivery and peer-close cleanup; it does not prove core reset or persistent-state recovery guarantees.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give simulated presence a per-device control channel with explicit ownership and lifecycle cleanup. If filesystem signaling remains necessary, use a private location, reject unexpected file types and symlinks, and report failed delivery instead of silently consuming the touch request.

Kill the server if terminate does not stop it.

If the server ignores SIGTERM or hangs, process.wait(timeout=5) raises TimeoutExpired. That exception replaces the original test failure, and the process is left running in CI. Catch the timeout and call process.kill().

Proposed fix
             finally:
                 process.terminate()
- process.wait(timeout=5)
+ try:
+ process.wait(timeout=5)
+ except subprocess.TimeoutExpired:
+                    process.kill()
+                    process.wait()

Review comment at @tests/rust_ccid.py around lines 99 - 101:
Update the process cleanup in the finally block to handle
`process.wait(timeout=5)` timing out: catch `subprocess.TimeoutExpired`, kill
the process, then wait for it to exit so cleanup does not replace the original
test failure or leave the server running.

20-32: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the client-side SET_ADDRESS from the regression test.

usbip_import() calls rust_attach() after the import response. The test then sends another SET_ADDRESS before CCID traffic. rust_submit() dispatches every endpoint-0 request through ck_usb_setup(). Therefore, a regression in import-time attachment can be masked by this extra request. Remove it so the test covers import followed directly by CCID traffic.

Suggested fix
- # Linux vhci_hcd consumes SET_ADDRESS rather than forwarding its URB.
- self.transfer(0, False, b'', bytes.fromhex('0009010000000000'))

Review comments at @Src/rust_adapter.inc:
- Around line 139-151: Update the direction == 0 bulk OUT handling to check
rust_halted[ep][0] for non-control endpoints. Continue consuming the full USB/IP
payload and running compat_device_loop, but skip ck_usb_out for halted endpoints
and set response.status to -EPIPE; preserve the existing behavior for non-halted
endpoints.
- Around line 117-137: Update rust_submit’s duplicate interrupt-IN handling so
an already host_ready endpoint receives a USB/IP submit reply with an -EBUSY
status instead of returning without replying; return an error only if writing
the reply fails, and leave the original pending request intact.
