## Path Handling Policy 🚨 CRITICAL

**The project uses a TRUE HANDS-OFF approach to path handling:**

1. **Accept all paths as-is** - No interpretation of Windows vs Linux paths
2. **File existence check only** - For immediate LLM UX feedback (`SimpleFileChecker`)
3. **Container mode: Simple prefix** - Only `/workspace/` prepend for existence checks
4. **Pass original paths unchanged** - To debug adapter (debugpy handles path resolution)
5. **No cross-platform logic** - Avoids unsolvable edge cases and complexity

**Key Files:**
- `src/utils/simple-file-checker.ts` - Only path-related logic (existence checking)
- `src/server.ts` - Uses SimpleFileChecker for validation, passes original paths to SessionManager

**Rationale:** Cross-platform path handling is theoretically impossible due to ambiguous edge cases. The debug adapter and OS know best how to handle paths for their environment.

## Architecture Overview

The codebase follows a layered architecture with dependency injection:

### Path Handling Complexity

**Theory**: Adapters handle path translation cleanly
**Reality**: Path handling is complex, especially with containers. See [path-resolution.md](../path-resolution.md) for the full story.
**Reality**: Path handling was abandoned entirely. **TRUE HANDS-OFF** approach - no path manipulation whatsoever. Debug adapters handle paths natively.

2. What are the legitimate architectural needs for path manipulation?
3. Should we implement a path abstraction layer?

### Task 21: Path Refactor Implementation (if needed)
**Conditional**: Only if Task 20 determines path manipulation is necessary

**Potential Work**:
- Implement `PathAbstraction` class
- Create platform adapters (WindowsPathAdapter, UnixPathAdapter)
- Refactor all path handling to use abstraction layer
### Task 21: Path Refactor - COMPLETED ✅
**RESOLUTION**: Path manipulation determined to be theoretically impossible

**Final Solution**:
- ❌ Path abstraction abandoned due to unsolvable edge cases
- ✅ **TRUE HANDS-OFF** approach implemented - no path manipulation
- ✅ Replaced with `SimpleFileChecker` for existence validation only
- ✅ All cross-platform path bugs eliminated

# Task 21: Path Handling Refactor - "Hands-Off" Approach Summary
# Task 21 + Continuation: TRUE HANDS-OFF Path Handling - Complete Scrub

## Overview
Successfully implemented a complete "hands-off" approach to path handling, removing all path manipulation logic from the MCP debugger and letting paths pass through unchanged to debugpy and the underlying OS.
**UPDATED**: Task 21 was incomplete. The actual complete "hands-off" implementation removes ALL path manipulation logic, including the PathValidator. This was completed in a subsequent scrubbing operation that eliminated the complex cross-platform path handling that was causing test failures and "prompt injection" documentation conflicts.

## Changes Made

### 1. Core Path Infrastructure Removed
- Removed all path handling logic from core components
- Eliminated path validation and transformation
- Let debugpy handle paths naturally
### 1. COMPLETE Path Infrastructure Removal
- ❌ **DELETED**: `src/utils/path-validator.ts` (374 lines of cross-platform complexity)
- ❌ **DELETED**: All path manipulation, normalization, Windows drive letter detection
- ✅ **REPLACED**: With `SimpleFileChecker` - ONLY file existence checking
- ✅ **TRUE POLICY**: Pass all paths unchanged to debug adapter

# SSE Test Intermittent Failure Fix

## Issue Description
The test `"should work when SSE server is spawned from different working directory"` in `tests/e2e/mcp-server-smoke-sse.test.ts` was failing intermittently during full test suite runs but passing consistently when run in isolation.

## Root Cause Analysis
1. **Not a real bug**: The server implementation works correctly when spawned from different directories.
2. **Test infrastructure issue**: The test was experiencing timing issues due to:
- Server startup taking longer when spawned from a different directory
- Increased load during full test suite execution
- Default 10-second timeout in `waitForPort` being insufficient

## Investigation Steps
1. Ran the test in isolation - it passed consistently
2. Ran the full test suite - test failed intermittently
3. Searched for hardcoded paths or `MCP_DEBUG_PROJECT_ROOT` usage - found none
4. Identified the issue was with the `waitForPort` timeout being too short

## Solution
Increased the timeout for `waitForPort` from 10 seconds to 30 seconds specifically for the test that spawns the server from a different directory:

```typescript
// Wait for server to be ready (give extra time when spawned from different directory)
console.log(`[SSE Smoke Test] Waiting for server on port ${serverPort} with 30s timeout...`);
const serverReady = await waitForPort(serverPort, 30000); // 30 second timeout
if (!serverReady) {
console.error(`[SSE Smoke Test] Server failed to start on port ${serverPort} after 30 seconds`);
}
expect(serverReady).toBe(true);
```

## Key Findings
1. The server can be spawned from any directory and works correctly
2. The test infrastructure needs longer timeouts for this specific scenario
3. The `MCP_DEBUG_PROJECT_ROOT` environment variable set in the test is not used by the implementation
4. Path resolution in the server uses `import.meta.url` correctly to find resources relative to the module location

## Recommendations
1. Monitor the test for any future intermittent failures
2. Consider implementing a more robust server startup detection mechanism
3. The `MCP_DEBUG_PROJECT_ROOT` environment variable in the test can be removed as it's not used
