9. Bed Carriage

We now move onto installing the Printer Bed. With FT Enderwire we have a new way of running the Bed and Thermostat wiring using an Umbilical.

First off lets install the M3 Threaded Inserts for all the parts in this section. 4 x M3 Threaded inserts for the 2 [a]_y_belt_clip_x2 and 5 x M3 Threaded inserts for the [a]_y_chain_bed_mount_generic as shown below.

M3 Threaded heat inserts

Next lets mount the 2 halves of the bed carriage. Do take note that there are M5 Nuts that need to be preloaded as you attach the carriage to the linear rails - you wont be able to insert these M5 nuts later so ensure they are in as you begin to mount. Also notice that there is an F imprinted on the right piece, this needs to face the front of the printer.

Bed Carriage Assembly

Next secure both sides of the bed carriage to the linear rails using 8 x M3x8 SHCS screws.

Bed Carriage Installation

We are now ready to attach the Y Belt we ran earlier to the Bed Carriage. pull the belt and place it on the inner side of the bed carriage and place a belt clip behind the belt with the groves facing the belt. Hold in place and screw in the 2 x M3x12 SHCS screws loosely. Repeat for the other side. Once in place pull the belts so that they are somewhat tight and tighten the 4 x M3x12 screws. You can now begin to tension the belt using the front Y tensioner screw.

Y Belt Installation

Next we will install the mounts that will hold the PG7 flex glands both on the bed and the deck panel.

  1. Install 2 x M5 T-Nuts into the extrusion where the [a]_y_umbilical_frame_mount will be screwed into place
  2. Attach [a]_y_umbilical_frame_mount to sandwiched between the deck panel into the M5 T-Nuts using 2 x M5x10 BHCS screws
  3. Attach [a]_y_chain_bed_mount_generic to y_axis_bed_carriage_b using 2 x M3x8 SHCS screws
  4. Attach [a]_y_umbilical_bed_PG7_mount to [a]_y_chain_bed_mount_generic using 3 x M3x8 SHCS screws

Y Umbilical mounts

  1. Install 2 x M3 T nuts into the center extrusion as shown below
  2. Secure [a]_y_axis_ls_mount to the extrusion using 2 x M3x8 SHCS screws
  3. Install the Y limit switch to [a]_y_axis_ls_mount using 2 x M3x8 SHCS

Y Limit Switch Installation

Next we will be installing the Y Carriage where the bed will mount to.

  1. Align the Y Carriage over the Y axis bed carriage printed parts with the M5 nuts that were preloaded in section 9
  2. Install the 4 x M5x16 BHCS screws to hold the Y carriage in place - Push the bed as far forward as possible and using a long ruler or spare extrusion put it against the Z axis while pushing the bed up to it to help align the bed carriage before tightening the M5x16 screws

Y Carriage Installation

Next we will install the bed and umbilical wiring.

  1. Preload M3 hex nuts into the [a]_thumb_nut_x2 and [a]_long_thumb_nut_x2 - Screw in an M3 screw and pull the nuts into place
  2. Install the M3x40 FHCS screws through the bed, springs and Y carriage
  3. Use the preloaded thumb nuts to secure the bed in place - this will be calibrated later so do not worry about the bed level at this stage
  4. Carefully install the magnetic bed sheet making sure it covers the entire bed and does not have any trapped bubbles
  5. Place the PEI sheet on top of the magnetic bed sheet
  6. Thread the bed heater and thermistor wires through the PG7 flex gland, then through the sleeving and through the final PG7 flex gland
  7. Drop the wires down through the deck panel through the [a]_y_umbilical_frame_mount
  8. Pull the wires through and align before tightening the PG7 flex glands in place
