Summary

A ContextView projects owner state into the ordered context for one LLM turn. One agent view owns the complete prompt and can compose skill views. The runtime collects and renders it; downstream formatting does not choose sources or invent content.

  • One contract: assemble(owner, CurrentCall) yields materialized Block, typed event, or CacheBoundary items.
  • Agent precedence: call → method → instance → class → default. Skills support instance/class views through the same owner-resolution hook.
  • DefaultAgentView is a standalone reference implementation with explicit sources, overrides, event selection, ordering, cache placement, and budgeting. Custom views can use any state API.
  • Explicit boundaries control cache annotations; provider-specific layout/cache handling stays behind UnifiedLLM.
  • Prompt compression belongs to views. State compaction blocks the agent, then applies at the next turn boundary. The default view reuses the parent request for prefix caching; custom views use an independent state-summary request. Events expose typed call_id attribution and related_call_ids relevance.

Design: docs/context.md. The custom-context quickstart demonstrates a CodeAct agent using its own research context API.

API changes

Keep agent.context, context/event managers, block overrides, skill activation, and Skill.context_block. Remove EventQuery, event_query=, scoped event selectors, and implicit cache injection. self.events.query() remains an inspection API. Registry names must map to distinct agent attributes; replacing the same full name remains supported.

Default-view recovery labels existing tool calls without results as outcome-unknown without changing storage. Absent/archived execution records are not reconstructed. Rendering remains strict.

Update (2026-10-23)

Independent full-PR review against bff0ef44 found two empty-prefix cache-boundary defects; both fixed and rechecked. Reviewer ran 1,971 tests plus 63 final focused checks. Live Terra quickstarts 03, 16, and a shortened 09 compaction scenario passed; the summary reused 1,518 cached input tokens. Latest-main merge conflicts remain; this update is ready for review, not merge.

Validation (2026-10-14)

  • Merged current main (3187c6df); independent Astra review approved the final design/code changes.
  • Full offline suite: 9,423 passed, 7 skipped, 3 expected failures (332 integration/stress/sandbox cases deselected).
  • Deterministic parity against current main: 6 scenarios, 7 requests, 33 messages; equal content/order after documented ID/formatting normalization. Covers skills, Predict, iterative CodeAct, filtering, overrides, expression errors, and eviction.
  • Full eval_pipeline, one Terra run across all configured samples: 116/116 passed. Terra also served as the model judge. Earlier candidate and clean-main control each scored 115/116 on different truncation questions; the candidate failure had identical normalized input on main.
  • Live quickstarts: structured output, CodeAct tools, dynamic notes, direct/registry skills, custom research context, and independent compaction. Inspected 14 final LLM requests: correct context placement and replay, no hidden-state leakage, parent overrides excluded from summaries.
  • Provider-cache/budget integration checks: 99 passed, 5 opt-in skips. Core package wheel/sdist build, lint/format, and changed-core type checks passed. Eight pre-existing typing errors in upstream connect/_session.py remain outside this change.

GitHub check status is reported by the checks below; local results are not a claim that hosted CI ran.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added customizable context views for agents and skills, letting applications choose the instructions, history, and other context sent to the model. A quickstart demonstrates selecting relevant research documents.
    • Added state compaction to summarize eligible stored history while preserving recent activity and leaving history unchanged when summaries fail or become stale.
    • Added event filtering by related call IDs and provenance for summaries.
  • Improvements
    • Cache boundaries are explicit; unsupported provider message layouts now raise clear errors.
  • Breaking Changes
    • Removed EventQuery configuration and event filtering through ScopedContext; use context views to select events.
  • Documentation
    • Added context-view and state-compaction guidance, including migration information.

Middleware that rewrites a request can cause stored history to be archived without having been summarized. Resumed sessions created before this change can also lose call-ID provenance and stored compaction markers. These issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Preserve explicit context boundaries and provider layout validation while incorporating upstream cache-stable wire formatting and token calibration. Remove a shadowed configuration method and narrow the cache mapping return type.

Verification: full offline suite 9081 passed; focused provider/context checks and live GPT 5.6 Terra passed; Astra integration review approved. Targeted core Pyright passes. The merge hook skips Pyright once due to eight reproduced, inherited onboarding probe type errors in connect/_session.py; no type-check configuration or ignores changed.

A/B tested 3187c6df (main) against 252b3fa9 (PR): 116 samples × 4 models × 3 runs per revision.

  • Pass rate: 93.1% → 92.2%. Retested all 19 declining model/test pairs: 299/360 → 295/360 (main → PR).
  • All 1,752 paired initial prompts matched after normalizing IDs, whitespace, and the removed outer XML wrapper.
  • Replayed three representative failure trajectories: all 24 requests per revision and final outputs matched. No context regression found in those cases; not every failing trajectory was replayed.

Small score differences remain; this is not proof of statistical equivalence.

Caching review: normal turns look compatible, but summaries no longer reuse the parent request

I compared this PR at 252b3fa94 with main at 60d0ddbec. Main is already included in the PR, and the fixes from #404, #410 and #411 are still present: stable text/tool-output representations, retention of up to 80 older Responses cache checkpoints, and forwarding the cache key as the session-affinity header.

The important exception is summarization. Main's 3c5c71d56 copies the completed parent request and appends a summary instruction, keeping the same starting prompt, tools, response format, settings and cache key. This lets the summary reuse work the provider has already cached.

This PR instead starts a separate Predict request over selected stored history. It uses the same client, but not the same prompt, tools, response format or request-level settings, and normally has a different cache key. Using the same client does not preserve reuse of the parent's cached prompt. The independent request also does not automatically run through the parent's request middleware, so parent-only routing or request checks need explicit coverage.

This appears intentional and gives the summary better isolation from executable tools and the parent's response format. However, it changes the cost/performance contract we added for cache-sharing summaries; it should not be described as equivalent caching behavior.

How to check: run uv run pytest tests/agents/test_state_compaction_wire.py. Its assertions explicitly require the summary to omit the parent's fixed instructions and tools and to use a different cache key. Compare those expectations with main's summary implementation at commit 3c5c71d56. The live summary tests also no longer require reuse of the parent's prefix or a positive summary cache read.

Requested change: explicitly decide whether parent-cache reuse is still a requirement. If it is, preserve an append-only summary path or provide a separately tested cache-sharing option without executing inherited tools. If independent summaries are the intended replacement, document the loss of parent-cache reuse and how request-level settings/middleware apply, and measure summary cache reads and cost on GPT 6.1 SOL before claiming equivalent performance.

Relevant code: independent summary request, changed wire-test expectations.

Verification for this review: 521 focused offline tests passed; 4 live cases were deselected. No live model calls were made, so this is not a measurement of current GPT 6.1 SOL cache-hit rates.

Caching review: safely omitted history can make the default view fail

The default view decides to insert a cache boundary based on whether it has any input items. Some valid history items intentionally produce no messages—for example, an assistant tool call whose execution record is absent. If these are the only items before the boundary, rendering fails even when a usable task block follows it.

Reproduction at 252b3fa94:

import asyncio
from nooa import Agent, DefaultAgentView, collect_context_items
from nooa.context_blocks import (
    OpenAIProviderFormatter, XMLBlockFormatter, render_context,
)
from nooa.llm_types import LLMResponse, ToolCall
from nooa.strategies.current_call import CurrentCall

async def main():
    agent = Agent(llm=object())
    agent.context_manager.disable("system_prompt", "self", "state")
    response = LLMResponse(
        tool_calls=[ToolCall(
            id="a", name="execute_python", arguments='{"code":"work()"}',
        )],
        finish_reason="tool_calls",
    )
    agent.event_manager.add(response) # No linked execution record.
    agent.context["task"] = "valid trailing task"
    call = CurrentCall(
        id="next", method_name="run", decorator="plan", agent=agent,
    )
    try:
        items = await collect_context_items(DefaultAgentView(), agent, call)
        render_context(
            items,
            block_formatter=XMLBlockFormatter(),
            provider_formatter=OpenAIProviderFormatter(),
        )
    finally:
        await agent.aclose()

asyncio.run(main())

Run with uv run python repro.py; no model call is needed. I reproduced:

UnsupportedContextLayout: XMLBlockFormatter emitted no message before CacheBoundary

Rendering that incomplete response alone correctly returns an empty message list. The failure is introduced by the automatically added boundary, not by the trailing task.

Requested change: handle an automatically inserted boundary whose preceding items all safely disappear during normal history rendering, so valid trailing context still reaches the model. Preserve omission of missing/archived execution records; do not fabricate tool results to fill the prefix. Add a test for full default-view assembly followed by rendering, rather than only testing the history helper in isolation.

Relevant code: boundary insertion, empty rendered segment rejection.

Caching review: make missing/empty boundaries consistent and document the direct-client change

There are two separate cases to clarify:

1. A direct client without a boundary loses the old instruction-only cache fallback. On main, forced cache_breakpoint="openai" or "anthropic" can mark leading instructions even when no CacheBoundary was supplied. This PR no longer does that. Default views usually add a boundary, but existing direct clients and custom views may silently stop requesting explicit caching. Provider automatic caching is separate; this does not mean all caching stops.

Requested change: add a direct-client migration example showing a boundary after fixed instructions and before changing input. State clearly that selecting an explicit cache mapping is no longer sufficient without a boundary.

2. An explicit boundary before any messages behaves differently depending on whether it goes through the renderer. The direct cache policy enables OpenAI explicit mode with an empty cached prefix. The renderer drops the same boundary, so explicit mode becomes disabled.

Reproduction at 252b3fa94:

from nooa import Block, CacheBoundary
from nooa.context_blocks import (
    OpenAIProviderFormatter, XMLBlockFormatter, render_context,
)
from nooa.context_blocks.models import Role
from nooa.unifiedllm.cache_policy import apply_cache_policy

direct = apply_cache_policy(
    [CacheBoundary(), {"role": "user", "content": "changing input"}],
    "openai", responses=True,
)
rendered = render_context(
    [CacheBoundary(), Block(
        key="live", content="changing input", role=Role.USER,
    )],
    block_formatter=XMLBlockFormatter(),
    provider_formatter=OpenAIProviderFormatter(),
).messages
through_renderer = apply_cache_policy(rendered, "openai", responses=True)
print(direct[2], through_renderer[2])  # True False

Run with uv run python repro.py; no model call is needed. I reproduced True False.

Requested change: choose and document one meaning for an empty-prefix boundary, then make direct-client and view-rendered requests agree. Add a test covering both routes and ensure the changing input is never accidentally marked as part of the fixed prefix.

Relevant code: no-boundary behavior, renderer dropping leading boundaries.

How does this interact with a view filtering events by call_id, like the new quickstart? collapse() creates a Summary without that metadata, so after compaction the view would exclude both the archived originals and their replacement summary, silently losing that history from the prompt. Previously token-budget summarization skipped filtered history (?)

Align the current_call example with the documented related_call_ids filter.

The example filters with event.call_id == call.invocation_id. docs/context.md tells views to filter with call.invocation_id in event.related_call_ids.

The two filters differ after compaction. collapse() creates a Summary with call_id=None and stores its sources in source_call_ids. A view that filters on call_id drops that Summary. The archived originals are also inactive. The invocation then silently loses that history from its prompt.

Use related_call_ids in this example so the guidance matches the docs.

Migrate legacy call IDs when loading stored events.

If a stored event has its call ID only in metadata, the new call_id field loads as None. SQLiteEventBackend validates the stored JSON without promoting that value. After a session resumes, events.query(call_id=...) misses those events, and a later collapse omits their IDs from source_call_ids. Promote legacy metadata["call_id"] during archive loading. Keep the documented behavior for newly constructed events unchanged. (github.com)

Make existing stored summaries readable.

If a SQLite session contains a pre-upgrade Summary, its JSON has no source_call_ids. The new required field makes validation fail. SQLiteEventBackend.get() then returns None, while all_events() skips the summary. A resumed session therefore loses its stored compaction marker from event reads. Migrate older summaries on load. Recover source IDs from archived children where available, and add a pre-upgrade SQLite fixture. (github.com)

Do not accept archival after the middleware removes the summary source.

When mode == "rewritten", the parent request contains only filtered. The cached-summary path copies that request and appends an instruction; it does not add the stored facts. The assertion at Line 127 then accepts archival of fact 0 and fact 1 even though the summary request did not contain them. A middleware that rewrites a real request can therefore remove those facts from future prompts without summarizing them. If the completed request no longer contains the source range, use stored-history summarization or leave the events active. Test that outcome instead. (github.com)

Paul: summary prefix-cache reuse Restored for the default view; live test reused 1,518 cached input tokens. Custom views use independent state-summary requests.
Paul: empty-prefix cache boundaries Fixed the assembly failure and preserved leading boundaries.
Alessio: call filtering drops summaries Summaries retain source call IDs; related_call_ids and relevance queries include them.
Alessio: docs and quickstart clarity Added a clearer introduction and inline comments; quickstart 16 passed live.
